The Tingling Medicine

As told by - The Bottle

Fever does give one a slight edge over one’s peer group. No school, hence no homework situation is a cause of envy, no doubt, but a full blown surgery puts one on a pedestal demanding admiration. To top it all, the fancy and serious display of medicines at one’s bedside, raises the VRP [viewer’s rating of popularity] manifolds. Of course, there is a small matter of some downright offensive tasting medicines that one has to swallow. But, on the whole it’s a win- win situation.

In this scenario, entered a medicine that tingled on the tongue. The lowly gargling powder, when dissolved in water, bubbled, creating lot of curiosity and amusement, in the audiences, between the age group of six to nine years. This motley group of five, envious sympathizers had collected around their cousin’s bedside, few days after her tonsillectomy. The collective input of the five standing and one lying brain, inevitably, led to a discovery. To the great excitement of the party present, it was discovered, that, if the bubbling medicine came in contact with the tongue, it produced a pleasant tingling and cooling sensation. On our little friend’s suggestion, all present on that day, authenticated the validity of this find by placing some powder on their tongue. Amidst much commotion, data was recorded mentally, after repeated observations. In no time, all the gargling powder was used-up by the experimenters. And they were in a fix. In this hour of need, our friend’s brilliant brain came up with an equally brilliant idea. To avoid detection, he filled up the empty bottle with talcum powder. This task was harder than presumed. A new talc tin sacrificed all its contents to a tiny bottle, one -tenth its size, at our friend’s insistence. Then they all vanished, leaving a tell tale trail of slippery talc on the floor and a bottle of gargling powder with poorly disguised, talcum in it.

“He had more talc on himself and looked like a ghost”, chuckled the talc tin. The lid could not stop rolling. It was laughing the hardest. “Avoid detection, ha! My foot. The talc was detected the moment I was opened. I can bet on anything that no gargling powder, has, a lingering floral fragrance.”

“Yes! The lid would know. Our friend sat on his faithful stool in his favorite corner without his evening milk and snack, on two counts: finishing the medicine and finishing the talc .The cloud of perfumed powder hovered around him, each time he moved his talc- coated head. He did have a distinct fragrant presence. And lot of people slipped on the floor that went wild with a layer of scented powder on it. This, free entertainment of roller- coaster variety, did not go down too well with adults. As, a punishment, all the sympathizers were made to mop the floor till it became its sober self,” concluded the bottle.

The giggling lid rolling on the floor said, “Ask the empty tin what they did with it. Don’t be shy tin, here is your chance to put matters right.” Encouraged thus, a rather introverted tin box rolled forward. Corner, the eldest of all cleared its throat indicating a polite interruption, "Let me introduce the charecters by name. It is rather tedious to keep talking in this ambiguous manner." There was an all round approval with the younger lot clapping with arms raised over their heads.

  1. Yeah, tingling medicine or the sweet pills used in homeopathy are only two types of medicine that go down closed throats. All other bitter and evil smelling medicines have been made by adults to scare the fever out of young bodies. There should be punishment for all mad scientists who come up with such distinctly horrible tasting and smelling medicines.
